Every material contains tendencies toward certain conditions of stability. A piece of wood has directions where its structure feels continuous and directions where it feels conflicted. A stone has areas where its internal forces appear balanced and areas where they resist integration. A composition has relationships that create harmony and relationships that create tension. Within these tendencies exists a point of alignment. Latent Form Theory calls this the axis of resolution. The axis of resolution is not a physical line hidden inside the material. Something does not behave as expected, so additional intervention is introduced to compensate. Refinement begins with understanding. A skilled sculptor does not ask stone to become anything imaginable. They ask what form can exist without violating the nature of the stone. The maker is not surrendering creativity. V. Decision as Elimination

Every decision in a subtractive process removes possibilities. This is why early decisions carry such importance. The first reduction establishes a direction. The second reduction confirms or challenges that direction. The third begins to reveal whether the chosen path contains coherence. The process is not a sequence of additions. “What should this become?”

The final object carries the quiet confidence of something that has passed through every necessary question. Nothing remains because it was convenient. Nothing remains because it was easy. Everything remains because it belongs.

VII. The Difference Between Alignment and Style

One of the greatest dangers near completion is the temptation to add personality after coherence has already been achieved. The maker sees the resolved form and feels the desire to make it more distinctive. A sharper edge. A deeper curve. An additional detail. A final signature. But sometimes the desire to add character is actually a desire to interrupt silence. Latent Form Theory distinguishes between alignment and stylization. Alignment comes from listening. Stylization comes from preference. Alignment strengthens the relationship between material and form. Stylization introduces something external. This does not mean style has no place in creative work. Human expression matters. But style reaches its highest expression when it emerges naturally from the conditions of the work rather than being applied afterward. The strongest signature of a maker is often the absence of unnecessary signature.

VIII. The Moment of Resolution

Resolution arrives quietly. There is rarely a dramatic moment when the object announces completion. Instead, there is a gradual recognition. The material no longer resists. The geometry no longer conflicts. The remaining choices no longer improve what exists. The maker begins to understand that another action would not reveal more. It would only change what has already become clear. This is the moment when intervention becomes unnecessary. Not because nothing more can be done. Because nothing more needs to be done.
